Attendance

Here at Kearsley Academy, we actively promote attendance with our students to ensure they understand the value of 'learning time'.

Strong evidence shows that for students who miss more than 50% of school only 3% manage to achieve 5 A* - C including English and Maths, whereas for students who miss less than 5% of school, 73% achieve 5 A* - C including English and Maths.

What do I do if my child is unable to attend school?

In the event that your child is not able to attend school for any reason please telephone the Academy attendance line on 01204 332560. Please give a specific reason why your child cannot attend.

If you are unable to contact the Academy for any reason please send a signed and dated note into the Academy on your child’s return giving the specific reason for absence.

What support is there if my child's attendance falls below target?

The Academy has a target for all students of 93% attendance or more and work hard to improve our attendance figures on all measures; reducing unauthorised attendance and persistent absentees.

If your child's attendance falls under 90% they will be classed as a low attender, this will trigger intervention from the Academy in order to ensure that your child's achievement is not further put at risk by continued low attendance.

For students who fall below Academy targets for attendance we employ a range of strategies to support those students and their parents to improve their attendance. Examples of these strategies would include

  • Mentoring
  • Attendance meetings with students and parents
  • Appointments with school nurse
  • Attendance reports
  • Weekly tracking by Form Tutors, Heads of Year
  • Home visits from Key worker

For students who are persistent absentees and whose absences are not authorised, Kearsley Academy does issue warning letters and fines in extreme circumstances.

For information regarding your child's attendance, reporting absence and general attendance enquiries, please ring our Attendance Officer : Mrs K Jackson on 01204 332560.

Do you reward my child for being on time?

We operate a rewards system based on VIVO miles. This is explained in the Respect and Reward section under the heading "Academy in Action". We use VIVOs to encourage good attendance in school. Your child will earn VIVOs every week if they can meet certain attendance targets:

  • 100% attendance = 25 VIVOs per week
  • 100% Punctuality = 10 VIVOs per week

Based on a 39 week school year, your child could earn over £10 worth of VIVOs just through attending school on time!
