Matching the level of challenge and support for students within learning begins with their first transition point to secondary education. We have an extensive transition programme with our local partner primary schools in which all of our subject areas work with both Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.

Since 2013 our core subjects and PE department have delivered curriculum training to primary teachers on various areas of teaching and learning. In particular our Maths and English ‘Brainiacs’ programme for Year 6 has informed planning and expectations for Year 7 work. Challenge is therefore built in at the transition point to secondary education and Key Stage 3 teachers have a ‘hands on‘ experience of the content and expectations at Key Stage 2. “The academy enjoys a growing reputation in the area, and has established effective partnerships with local primary schools”. Ofsted May 2013.
The teaching element within the Primary Liaison and Transition programme is to ensure that there is a ‘smooth move’ from KS2-3 in terms of understanding variables such as:
• Primary Teaching and Learning styles
• Classroom layouts / delivery / groupings
• Differentiating lessons
• Familiarity with the KS2 Curriculum and expectations at KS2
• To work with Year 6 and familiarise Kearsley Academy staff with ‘narrowing the gap’ from KS2-3
• Inform schemes of work here at Kearsley Academy in terms of KS2-4 progress
• Inform schemes of work for the Accelerated Curriculum in Year 7 as well as the breadth of subject areas in terms of starting points
• Have staff in core areas of English and Maths particularly working with Year 6 in pitching starting points for Year 7
To support the transition from Key Stage 2 - 3 we have our very own Primary Zone please take a look at how we are we are continuing to develop our transition model.
