Reading, Writing and Communication - LAL (Learning and Literacy)

Students are encouraged to see the Literacy in all subjects that they study. Not only does this promote the importance of Literacy in their education but in their everyday lives.

High expectations for literacy is a whole academy ethos and all teachers are requested to ensure that it is explicit in students learning within their subject area, this is quality assured through work book scrutiny’s and termly extended writing ‘Big Write’ within long term planning. A proof reading code is followed by both teachers and students, encouraging the refinement and improvement of written work. The focus on literacy through teacher guidance and student self - editing allows students to reflect, improve and embed progress.

Form tutor periods also develop the acquisition and development of literacy skills and reading is actively promoted through the ‘extreme reading challenge’ and the introduction of 'Big Read Fridays'. student writing has been addressed with the introduction of a proof reading code for both teachers and students, which encourages the refinement and improvement of written work.
